In recent times, there were Plans under the behest of UN to reunify the island. Although, the Turkish Cypriots accepted the plan, the other warring section, the Greek Cypriots totally rejected it. Joining European Union as a divided country had certainly affected the chances of future reunification of the warring blocks. However, the EU countries in one hand recognised the official government of Cyprus Republic but treated Turkish Cypriot as a military occupied area. At the same time, for the sake of trade, the EU ministers expressed in no uncertain terms, to open direct trade links with the occupied area of Northern Cyprus.
The reason for EU’s trade interest in Cyprus was mainly because the upswing of economic condition in the Island. The economy of Cyprus Republic since couple of decades was steadily rising. The situation of their counter part was not that good. That is mainly because of the international embargo imposed on Northern Cyprus. However, lately the economy of Turkish Cypriot is looking up with the revenue earned through construction sector. The tourism is flourishing also in a big way which certainly swelling the government’s exchequer. The Turkish Cypriot government has further taken questionable decisions to sale the properties still owned by Greek Cypriots to private overseas buyers. It is not surprising, therefore, that several thousand European buyers have already invested in Estates in Northern Cyprus which really belonged to Greek Cypriots.
However, the situation in the Island during the last one decade has certainly exuded signs of prosperity in calm and stable condition prevalent along cease fire line. It is further heartening to see that in July, 2006, the Island served as a safe haven for fleeing Labanese due to the war like situation between Israel and Lebanon. The all significant issue of unison of the two wings of the Cyprus is still swinging like a pendulum. At times showing gleaming positive signs of unity followed by despair of disunity.
